ABOUT DNA TESTING
The DNA paternity test is the use of DNA samples to establish whether an individual is the biological parent of another person. Paternity testing may be particularly important when the rights and duties of the father are at stake and the paternity of the child is in doubt. Testing can also determine
the likelihood of someone being a biological grandparent. Although genetic testing is the most reliable standard, there are also older methods, including blood type ABO, analysis of various other proteins and enzymes, or the use of human leukocyte antigens. Recent paternity verification methods use a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP).
DNA TESTING METHOD
The DNA test is conducted by extracting the buccal (cheek) cells located on the inside of a person's cheek with a buccal or cheek swab. These swabs have wooden or plastic stick handles with a synthetic fiber or cotton tip. The collector rubs the inside of a person's cheek to extract as many oral cells as possible, which are then sent to a laboratory for examination. Samples of the presumed father or mother and the infant would be required.
